Introduction to MATLAB for Math Modeling Series

Introduction to MATLAB for Math Modeling Series

Free two-hour session for M3 Challenge teams.

November 9, 2021

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge) developed material for a free online workshop geared to high school math teachers and students that will introduce and expand existing knowledge of math modeling and technical computing techniques for solving open-ended problems based on real issues. Four date and time options are offered for the same two-hour workshop - so that you can choose what works best for you.

NOTE for past webinar participants - the material presented in each of these four sessions will be largely the same as the content of previous two-hour online webinars (recall the CATS CATS CATS problem) presented in February 2021, October 2020, and June 2020.

Teams – coaches and students - who are interested in exploring MATLAB as a way to analyze, visualize, and solve modeling problems.

Program Overview

MATLAB® is a programming language that allows you to analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models in an easy-to-use desktop environment. This hands-on webinar presents the essentials you need to use MATLAB to solve a typical math modeling question. This webinar is for teams who want to learn more about MATLAB and how to use it for modeling.

In this hands-on webinar, attendees will learn to calculate population growth data, visualize and format data graphically, and perform analysis to observe data trends via an accessible and engaging problem.

Key topics include:

  • Navigating MATLAB desktop
  • Working with variables in MATLAB
  • Using MATLAB functions
  • Creating informative data visualizations
  • Conducting computational analysis
  • Automating analysis with scripts and programming constructs
  • Exporting MATLAB scripts for sharing

Instructor: Tanya Kuruvilla- Technical Evangelist, MathWorks
This program and computing module is based on a problem developed by Dr. Ben Galluzzo at Clarkson University.
