Moody’s Invests in American Youth, One Math Challenge at a Time
April 25 math events calculated to bring together dozens of high school students nationally and locally
New York City, NY – It may be spring recess in New York City next week, but dozens of students will be in Manhattan, sharpening their pencils and counting on math to help them solve challenges relevant to everyday life.
It’s all part of an initiative by The Moody’s Foundation and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics that aims to promote the relevance of math beyond the classroom and encourage high school students to consider math and science-related careers, which are increasing in demand.
At the Moody’s World Trade Center headquarters, some of the brightest young minds in the country will compete for the top spots in the popular national Moody’s Mega Math (M^{3}) Challenge and a piece of the $150,000 being awarded in scholarships.
Down the street at the High School of Economics and Finance, a select group of students from six local underserved high schools will participate in a first-of-its-kind outreach initiative – called the Moody’s Mega Math Workshop – where they will add up the reasons why math is important in their lives. Three lucky participants will be chosen at random to each receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

“Math is the key to many of the most rewarding jobs in the country, and to providing insight on problems related to the environment, our weather, limited resources, and even everyday activities like comparison shopping,” said Fran Laserson, President of The Moody’s Foundation. “Our goal with these initiatives is to help young people open doors to future careers in math and science, and look at mathematics through a relevant and useful lens.”
About the Moody’s Mega Math Challenge
The M^{3} Challenge involves top 11^{th} and 12^{th} grade students from across the country using mathematical modeling to recommend solutions to real-world problems – in this case, to the future of the auto industry, from car-sharing to driverless technologies. From a pool of 5,000 students, or 1,100 teams, six teams – from Berkeley Heights, NJ, Carmel, IN, Durham, NC, Houston, TX, Providence, RI and Silver Spring, MD – were selected by a national panel of judges to participate in the finals. Now in its 11^{th} year, the M^{3 }Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool and a viable, exciting profession.
About the Moody’s Mega Math Workshop
The three-hour (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) Moody’s Mega Math Workshop is the first initiative of its kind, providing an unprecedented opportunity for approximately 50 students from six underserved New York City schools. Offered free-of-charge to participants – who were selected by each of their owns schools according to the school’s individual criteria – the workshop includes hands-on math modeling instruction, inspirational words from speakers about the practical applications of math, complimentary snacks and a range of freebies such as stadium blankets, backpacks, ear buds, pencils and more. Three students will be selected at random to receive a $1,000 college scholarship, courtesy of the workshop organizers.
