Record number of schools set to participate in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge

More than 1,500 teams registered for annual math contest taking place this weekend

Nearly 7,000 high school students across the United States will spend this Saturday or Sunday – from early in the morning until late at night – using their math modeling prowess to solve a relevant, real-life problem with the hope of winning a portion of the $125,000 in scholarships that will be awarded by The Moody’s Foundation. Even teams that don’t win stand to gain a wealth of experience just by competing in the tenth annual Moody's Mega Math (M3) Challenge, a competition unlike any other, on February 28 and March 1.

The problem topic in the Internet-based contest remains unknown until participants get online access at 7 a.m. on their selected day of Challenge weekend. Participating teams will then spend the next 14 hours gathering data and information regarding the topic, making assumptions, and devising mathematical models to provide insight about the issue before submitting their solutions.

This year, the Challenge is offering participants free access to advanced computing software including MathWorks’ MATLAB and Wolfram’s Mathematica to aid in their math modeling solutions. A handbook on mathematical modeling is also available for free download. In addition to instructions on various steps of the modeling process, the guide includes "reference flashcards," sample modeling problems, and analysis of a previous winning paper from the Challenge.   

The M3 Challenge, which is organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), has been motivating students to pursue careers in science and math for the past decade. As a tribute to the contest’s 10-year milestone, champions from past Challenges reminisced about their Challenge experience in a series of videos, which are available on the 10-year-anniversary page.
