Do you need help preparing to use technical computing for MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge? MathWorks is hosting a MATLAB Onramp Week (January 18th – January 22nd) to inspire you and walk you through the essentials of MATLAB, and to help teachers and students prepare for M3 Challenge. Take part in this weeklong challenge to complete “MATLAB Onramp,” which is a two-hour introductory course. Once you complete the course, send your certificate of completion to [email protected] by 5:00 pm EST on Friday, January 22nd, for a chance to win fun prizes.
You can complete MATLAB Onramp independently, but if you have questions that you would like help with, or want to be guided through a bit more, be sure to attend the sessions for live Q&A, below, to help you complete the course. Note that each day progresses through five of the Onramp lessons. Registration for the live Q&As are not necessary, just jump in through the corresponding “Add to calendar/Join” links below.

All participants will need a free MathWorks account. Participants can sign-in or create a new account here: https://www.mathworks.com/login. Participants can access MATLAB Onramp through their web browser for free once they have an account. If you have registered a team for M3 Challenge, you can also register for a free MATLAB license via the M3 Challenge website on the Access Software page. This license will be good through the entire Challenge cycle and can allow your team to continue exploring MATLAB after they complete MATLAB Onramp.
Participants should submit the certificate of completion (for prize raffles) and any questions to [email protected].
Program Overview
MATLAB® is a programming language that allows you to analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models in an easy-to-use desktop environment. Learn the basics of MATLAB through this two-hour introductory tutorial on commonly used features and workflows. This course is for anyone who wants to learn more about MATLAB and how to use it for math modeling in M3 Challenge.
Key topics include:
- Navigating MATLAB desktop and Editor
- Working with variables in MATLAB
- Array Calculations- Indexing into & modifying arrays
- Using MATLAB functions
- Visualizing variables using MATLAB’s plotting functions
- Importing data from different files into MATLAB
- Creating informative data visualizations
- Automating analysis with scripts and programming constructs
- Bring together concepts that you have learned with a project
