Privacy Policy

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge ("we", "us", "M3 Challenge" or "the Challenge") is committed to providing a safe and secure experience for users of this website.  This statement discloses the privacy practices of MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge. We will protect all personal information that users of the site provide to us. Users of this website agree to be bound by this Privacy Policy without limitation or qualification. Please check this page often for any changes in our policies.

The information we collect from site visitors

We collect general site usage information from users for web analytics purposes. This includes data on page views, unique and new visitors, average time spent on the site, and sections of the site that users visit most frequently. While we do not gather personal details about general site visitors except their geographical location, we do collect some technical information including computer IP addresses, browser type, and connection speeds, in addition to referral sites and search engines from which users may have been directed.  We do not use this information to try to contact any visitors to the site.

The information we collect from participants

The information we collect from those who register for the Challenge and those who request more information about it may include: name, gender, grade, e-mail address, and high school contact information.

We use the information provided by registered students and teacher-coaches, which they agree to accept when they register as a team for the contest, to contact them regarding contest details and deadlines in order to ensure the smooth administration of the Challenge. Registrants who sign up for e-alerts receive updates, reminders, and alerts via e-mail sent through MailChimp about new information that has been posted to the site.  They also receive a brief, post-Challenge survey about their experience. Participants may opt out of the e-alert mailing list at anytime.  We do not use or share any personally-identifiable information for matters unrelated to MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge and its mission.

Teams designated as winners in the judging process get additional communications so that we can pay the scholarship amounts to their schools. Winners also are communicated with approximately once per year thereafter, assuming they have kept their emails up to date with us, as a follow up check in to see where they are, majors, jobs and industries in which they work. This is OUR measure of whether we are doing a good job. No commercial use of emails.

Teams who do not get any winning designation – that is no scholarship prizes – likely do not receive subsequent communication – other than inviting them to participate in the Challenge again if they are eligible.

The names and images of winners of the contest may be published on the site, distributed in press releases (and thereby in local, regional, or national newspapers and/or radio and television outlets), and in the official publication of the contest organizer, SIAM News. Prior consent from parents/guardians of participating students is obtained for these purposes.

Data security and accuracy

We have put in place all physical, electronic, and managerial procedures required to prevent the unauthorized use of data and to maintain the accuracy of information provided to us by users. Please notify us if there are any errors in your personal information, and we will do our best to rectify them immediately.

Privacy of children

The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge website is intended for use by adults and students in the eleventh or twelfth grades.
