Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics ("SIAM," "we" or "us"), as organizer of MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge (the "M3 Challenge"), respects and understands your concerns about confidentiality and privacy when you visit our website, and we take appropriate and reasonable steps to ensure that any information you give us is handled in a safe and responsible manner.

This Privacy Policy describes the types of information that we may collect from you or that you may provide when you visit the website, https://m3challenge.siam.org or https://mym3challenge.siam.org/ (together, the " Website"), and the practices of SIAM for collecting, using, maintaining and protecting that information.

It is important to remember that by using the Website, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. We suggest that you refer to this Privacy Policy on a regular basis as it may change at any time in SIAM's sole discretion, in order to allow us to take advantage of technological advances or for business purposes or legal reasons.

Our Website is not intended for children under 13 years of age. No one under age 13 may provide any personal information to or on the Website. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, do not use or provide any information on this Website. If we learn we have collected or received personal information from a child under 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information. If you believe we might have any information from or about a child under 13, please contact us using the information provided below.


How We Use Your Information

We use information that we collect about you or that you provide to us, including any personal information: to present our Website and its contents to you; to provide you with information, products, or services that you request from us; to fulfill any other purpose for which you provide it; to provide you with notices about your registration account; to carry out our obligations and enforce our rights arising from any agreements and contracts entered into between you and us; to notify you about changes to our Website or any products or services we offer or provide though it; to allow you to participate in interactive features on our Website; and for any other purpose that we deem relevant to M3 Challenge contest and its goals to motivate and inspire students to study and pursue careers in applied math, computational science and technical computing. We also use information from your participation in the M3 Challenge as further described below.


Information Collection and Usage

Information You Provide to Us

The information we collect on or through our Website may include information that you provide by filling in forms on our Website. This includes information provided at the time of registering for e-alerts, forms submitted on our Website, registering or participating in M3 Challenge, or requesting further services or information. We may also ask you for information when you report a problem with our Website or if you report issues during the M3 Challenge weekend and your Challenge time.

Participation in M3 Challenge is voluntary, and by participating in the M3 Challenge, a participant agrees to provide such personal information as needed by SIAM to operate and administer the M3 Challenge.  Participants grant SIAM the right to use this information to publicly recognize participants, their results, and to promote the M3 Challenge and future competitions.

Participants or their legal guardian have the right to:

  • View their personally identifiable information.
  • Request that SIAM delete part or all personally identifiable information.  To the extent that the requested deletion may conflict with the M3 Challenge requirements, such request may, at SIAM's option, require the participant to withdraw from the M3 Challenge.

M3 Challenge coaches and team members understand and accept that the decision of judges is final and that the complete entry and solution paper will not be returned to the coaches or team members and will become property of SIAM and the program sponsor, MathWorks, who are permitted to use all or any parts of the information contained therein. SIAM and MathWorks have the right to use the submitted student work for any educational or promotional purposes they deem appropriate and relevant, including providing anonymized solutions for public use as examples for future competitions. Students may also use their submitted work; provided they cite it appropriately as being their solution to M3 Challenge, with year indicated.

Information We Collect through Automatic Data Collection

To facilitate a more intuitive and easy-to-use website, we may automatically track certain information about you. The Website may use cookies, web beacons, and tracking technologies to understand how users navigate our sites and view content. This may include information such as the URL that you just came from (whether this URL is on our site or not), which URL you go to next (whether this URL is on our site or not), what browser you are using, and your Internet Protocol (IP) address. We do not collect or use this information to create a profile about you, but rather to help us provide information which is targeted to your interests.

We may also use personally identifiable information to deliver information that, in some cases, is targeted to your needs and interests, such as promotional emails, targeted banners, and promotions. If you supply us with your email or mailing address, you may receive occasional mail from us announcing services, promotional events, or other official communications in regard to M3 Challenge and other relevant matters. If you do not wish to receive such mailings, please email us using the email address below, indicating your email address or mailing address, as applicable, and asking us to remove you from our mailing list.


Third Party Collectors of Information and Disclosure to Third Parties

We may provide information to third parties we use to support M3 Challenge or the Website. These third parties are required to sign non-disclosure agreements and are required to keep personal information confidential.


On occasion, we may share your name and postal mailing address to relevant companies that we pre-evaluate, so they can let you know about their products or services that we think might be of interest to you. If you prefer that we NOT share your name and mailing address with any outside companies for the purposes of third party offers, or if you wish to access or correct your information for any other purpose, you may contact us by:

Legal Disclosures

We can (and you authorize us to) disclose any information about you as required by law, including voluntary disclosures to law enforcement agencies and government officials, as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate. Our Privacy Policy only addresses the use and disclosure of information SIAM collects from you. The SIAM website may contain links to other sites, however, SIAM is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those external sites.


Security

We use current industry standard Transport Layer Security software (TLS) to encrypt your personal information during the registration process.

We have implemented measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. All information you provide to us is stored on our secure servers behind firewalls.

Unfortunately, there is always some risk involved in transmitting information over the internet regardless of our efforts. For example, third parties may unlawfully intercept or access files, transmissions, or private communications. Therefore, although we use industry standard practices to protect information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information or private communications.

It is our policy to post any changes we make to our Privacy Policy on this page. The date the Privacy Policy was last revised is identified at the top of the page.
