Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) announced today that its MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge 2023 (M3 Challenge) has opened registration for teams from the U.S., England, and Wales. Sixth form students (ages 16-19) and U.S. high school junior and senior students will compete for $100,000+ (£75,000+) in scholarship prizes. A total of 37 scholarship prizes will be awarded. The contest is 100% free of registration or participation fees.
Registration Deadline: February 24, 2023, at 4 p.m. ET.
Challenge Weekend: March 3-6, 2023.

About M3 Challenge
Now in its 18th year, M3 Challenge spotlights applied mathematics and technical computing as powerful problem-solving tools and viable, exciting professions and attracts the participation of thousands of students. Participants work in small teams, committing 14 consecutive hours on the designated Challenge weekend to devise a solution to a real-world problem using mathematical modeling.
Of the hundreds of participating teams, nine are selected as finalists, including three that will receive technical computing awards for the optional use of code in their solutions. Submissions are judged by an international panel of 100+ mostly Ph.D.-level mathematicians. The competition’s final presentation and awards ceremony event will be held in New York City in late April – an all-expense paid experience for the finalist teams.
M3 Challenge is different from other math competitions in that it requires that students use math modeling to represent, analyze, make predictions, and provide insight into current world issues. Use of code to enhance solutions is encouraged but optional; it is not required to win any prize except the technical computing awards.
Past competitions have had students address issues such as the transition of trucking from diesel to electric, substance abuse, food insecurity, internet access, and recycling.
Participants are offered a range of free resources, training materials, and software licenses to help them prepare for the Challenge – including MathWorks’ MATLAB software, which is widely used across academia and commercial industries around the world.
Since 2006, M3 Challenge has awarded more than $1.75 million in scholarships.
